Amelia Park, Worthing
Amelia Park is an historic wooded park in the heart of Worthing. Overlooking the park is Park Crescent, a regency terrace arranged in a serpentine shape in the manner of Royal Crescent in Bath. It is a fine example of a Georgian architecture and was designed in 1829 by Amon Henry Wilds and constructed between 1831 and 1833.
Park Crescent is reached through a triumphal arch, originally designed for carriages. The main archway contains the moulded busts of four bearded men as Atlantes and the two side arches contain the busts of four young ladies as Caryatids.
The archway is exposed to the usual amount of urban pollution and weathering and was in need of some repair and restoration. A generous donation from the local Regency Society had helped fund the initial progress on the survey and report.
