Aedificium Conservation can offer the full range of surveys, planning advice, specifications and project management for your building restoration project.

Condition Surveys

A condition survey is an essential part of the process to fully understand the condition of your building or edifice. Conservation surveys are used throughout a conservation project to determine the condition and to identify necessary actions for preserving, conserving or repairing materials. A Pre-Contract Survey can also be produced detailing the overall condition and any major works involved.

Production of condition reports and fault analysis

Once the survey has been completed we have extensive knowledge and technical expertise to produce a tailored condition report using our specialist team of Building Surveyors and Engineers. This documentation serves as an ongoing historical archive and provides advice about maintenance of the building in the future.

Recording & ‘opening up’

A record of a building or site is an important tool in the planning and implementation of conservation projects and enables better analysis and interpretation of the historical and archaeological resource preserved in every old building. Photography, observational analysis and instrument surveys can all shed light on the processes of development and decay.

Project Specifications

Once the restorative works have identified, the specifications for the works are specified. This is includes materials, repair techniques and methodologies as well as determining the relevant trades. Samples and trials of materials and processes can be set up to isolate the optimum approach.

Planning advice

We can provide experienced planning advice throughout a project including pre-application advice and the preparation of applications for listed building consent. We can also provide a liaison service acting as agent for client with relevant authorities in planning and conservation matters.

Preparation of Heritage Statements

A Heritage Statement enables the significance and special character of a building or place to be understood in greater detail by planning authorities and allow for effective project management. These will almost always be advised for planning applications on listed properties.

Statements of significance

A Statement of Significance of a historic building is a summary of the cultural and natural heritage values currently attached to it and how they interrelate and convey its particular character. It explains the heritage values of the building and therefore guides all decisions about any material change to it.

Site works

Using traditional trades, conventional techniques and authentic materials, our experienced team can carry out maintenance, reconstruction and alterations to retain the original soul and spirit of a wide range of period and listed buildings.

Project Management

We can oversee your building conservation project from start to finish, from survey to handover. Alternatively you can use our services for whatever stage (or stages) of the project you require. We can also with work with local authorities and academic institutes on Building Conservation & Historical Research Projects.

Conservation Laser Cleaning

Laser cleaning systems in conservation emit pulses of infrared light which tend to be absorbed by pollution encrustations, dirt layers and surface contaminants, whereas the surface of the object will reflect this light. By differentiating between the dirty and clean surfaces, this extremely fast heating effect generates forces sufficiently strong to eject the dirt particles away from the surface.

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI)

RTI is a digital photographic method that captures the surface shape and colour of an object or facade and enables the interactive re-lighting of the subject from any direction. RTI produces an enhancement of the object’s attributes using computer technology revealing surface information that is not disclosed under direct examination.
